1 ) GLOBAL MY THOUGHTS Threats: *Ozone - Crucial for survival of life on planet *CO2/Methane/other GCC gases - adaptable *Changes in Land Use = Source of 40+% Q: Does this include Loss of Services or only WRSC OUTPUT Q: What are the relevant PSYCHOLOGICAL / social / cultural conditions and forces? Which help and which hinder? Changes in Land Use are the Primary Indicators of the land's ability to USE the WATER effectively to provide the things we NEED! (Undisturbed or Recovered Ecosystems are capable of providing water and food for the evolved inhabitants.) (Energy is acutally a SECONDARY NEED - I don't need electricity or oil - I need the things they allow me to get.) EVEN THOUGH WE ARE ASKING FOR GLOBAL WHEN IT COMES TO SOCIAL/CULTURAL CONDITIONS for DECISION-MAKING It is STILL ALWAYS Individual and Personal! CONDITIONS and FORCES: Who are the people who have water? Do not have water?
AND WHY? What are NEEDS v. WANTS? Primary SURVIVAL v. Discretionary SATISFACTION? How do DIFFERENT Populations DEFINE ENOUGH? "ENOUGH" is a psychological
In order to identify Sustainable Solutions, we must FIRST identify ALL (or as many as we can - evolves) the Challenges/Problems Because otherwise, we are solving symptoms not core/root causes CONDITIONS: GLOBAL - ARE THERE ANY NATURAL / CULTURAL / SOCIAL OR PSYCH CONDITIONS WHICH ARE GLOBAL? Basic Needs (but not "Wants") (not hot / not cold) Air Water Food Warmth
Survival of WE vs. ME (inherently feminine v. masculine? until culture/social pressure/change?)
* Natural (Environmental) (GEOGRAPHY MATTERS) e.g., Does the local population exceed the local water source availability? If Yes, is it a cultural (e.g., dams; over-plowing; diverting; using up natural capital [rather than "interest", e.g. cutting down trees]) social (e.g., have as many kids as possible...) psychological (e.g., meet today's desires without thinking of future; entitlement [I am more important]
*Cultural (Internal - e.g., Inherited Beliefs - evolving - impacts social + psychological) Does the local population have belief(s)/make choices which impact local water source availability? If Yes, is it a environmental (e.g., nature is to be used up; nature is sacred; nature has no intrinsic value]) social (e.g., have as many kids as possible...) psychological (e.g., meet today's needs without thinking of future; entitlement [I am more important than you]) * Social (External - e.g., Personal and Group Economics evolving - can impact cultural + psychological ) (DM: WHY? 1- KEEP POWER/WATER ON Does the local population exceed the local water source availability? FULL TIME. 2- ALSO COST. If Yes, is it a 3- ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT environmental (e.g., water is abundant or "scarce"; land has been abused so less water available) cultural (e.g., my wealth is dependent upon how many kids ...) psychological (e.g., meet today's needs without thinking of future; entitlement [I/We are more important] *Psychological How much of a persons decision-making is conscious vs. subconscious motivations? If Yes, is it a environmental (e.g., nature is to be used up; nature is sacred; nature has no intrinsic value]) cultural (e.g., dams; over-plowing; diverting; using up natural capital [rather than "interest", e.g. cutting down trees])
social (e.g., have as many kids as possible...) FORCES:: GLOBAL - ARE THERE ANY NATURAL / CULTURAL / SOCIAL OR PSYCH FORCES WHICH ARE GLOBAL?
First - in affluent regions - WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE WATER COMES FROM? COMMODITY? Should we change how water is characterized? (right v. commodity?)
Individual
Husband/Plumber example who do you trust home small business commercial utility-scale Dr. Wesley - social pressure model Contrarians INDOOR v. OUTDOOR *What percentage is each (related to ECONOMIC STRATA CITY v. SUBURB v. RURAL -
*Level of connection to the land and water and understanding of land/water connection
Neighborhood/Community
At this level are we sometimes eager, sometimes resistant and sometimes could care less even Bullied (?) to make choices contrary to our *comfort level *personal morals/ethics/belief systems *religion *culture *disassociated from water impacts/efforts *Tribal conflicts (warring?) Human needs v. human behaviour NEEDS Air Water Food Extremes (variable)
Energy
Shelter from
BEHAVIOR Me v. You Us v. Them Competition v. Collaboration/Cooperation feminine?) In Physics (amplification v. damping)
(masculine v.
Caldean neighborhood/community still wash their cars - and water runs into street = water quantity and water quality Source: related to transfer of information HOW and WHY is this info transfer not happening - despite
government efforts ALSO Somali Philippines
And many other populations!
Is this partially a FORMAT issue ?? Do they READ? Do they WANT AND can they AFFORD a TV / RADIO? Churches - Would this be a reasonable and valid source of information transfer? (would translate into relevant language) Why/how are the teacher/school efforts thru children working? (or NOT?) LINK these WITH CHURCH efforts?
WHO ELSE TALKS TO (say) 100 PEOPLE in a WEEK? AFFECTING BEHAVIORS?! How are these
WHAT ELSE?? To Effect Change? *Competition between various social groups *Government Local: Tiered Rates Consistent Message (Drought v. New Normal) Restrictions *Private Companies and Vested Interests?
*Finances and PROFIT MOTIVE *Deniability or actual state of possible - PLUS Haves and Have NOTs *Consumer societies - have/make/buy more... *Self - regulation? *Costs to trans *Tribal
2) NATIONAL/STATE MY THOUGHTS
WRSC OUTPUT
3) REGIONAL (SOCAL/SD) MY THOUGHTS *NOT a Desert - Semi-Arid Riparian/Chaparral Look at Undisturbed and Recovering *Progression - Natural and Man-enhanced
*Catastrophe and Replacement *Fertile Islands *Complete Cover (plants need close contact for optimal health) *Water Handling and Water Requirements Chaparral Riparian Landscapes "Desert"

4) INTEGRATION MY THOUGHTS
