This chart shows the devices that are used for electronic commerce. Computers are the leading device but recently we have seen the increased use of other devices such as the tablet and smartphones. We can expect to see the continuous increase of these devices in the near future.

This image displays the process of an online transaction. The image shows the flow of how a customer can purchase a product online. After, the transaction is completed when the money is withdrawed from the customer's bank into the merchant's bank. The flow chart displays the facile manner in which an electonic purchase can be made.

Total Retail vs. E-Commerce

The trend shows that the e-commerce growth rate is about twice the growth rate of retail sales.  Even during the recession in 2008/2009, e-commerce sales had a growth rate above that of retail.  This could be caused by the convenience of e-commerce that allows people to shop from home and compare prices without having to drive to several different stores.

The timeline dates as far back as the 1960s when the beginnings of electronic commerce were noted with developments such as Electronic Data Interchange which allowed companies to carry out electronic transactions.

The actual risk for a country to suffer in a long term from a natural disaster depends on the actual exposure but also on the vulnerability of a society (how can they cope and adapt to the event). Central America as well as big parts of Africa and Asia are at high risk to suffer in a long term from natural disasters.
