Event Description:

This GeoDesign event will focuses on the conversion of ArcMap projects into open source ArcGIS Online maps. We will discuss the benefits of ArcGIS Online maps, their limitations, lessons learned in the conversion process, and how ArcGIS Online compares to other open source geo-spatial data tools such as QGIS, Google Earth (Pro), and OpenStreetMap.  Explore various ways that you can share your maps with the public as links embedded in a website.

We will touch on the benefits and limitations of ArcGIS Online, including:
  • Interactivity for the public user who doesn't have an account to access ARC Maps
  • File size limitations and how to work around them
  • The user interface: how intuitive is it?
  • The differences between ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Explorer Online
  • Extra features with a paid subscription to ArcGIS Online for Organizations

We encourage GIS users to come and share their open source experiences, which platforms work for them, and their ideas for the future of open source GIS
