  • Inside Hawaiian Electric's new plan to get to 100% renewables
    Apr 14, 2016 - Herman K. Trabish - utilitydive.com

After failing to satisfy regulators twice in the last few years, the Hawaiian Electric Companies (HECO) filed their third attempt at a power supply plan at the beginning of this month.  In a nutshell, HECO's Power Supply Improvement Plan (PSIP), filed April 1, is a roadmap detailing how the utility will comply with Hawaii's historic Act 97, which mandated last year that the state shift to 100% renewable electricity generation by 2045.

  • Oregon Passes Historic Bill to Phase Out Coal and Double Down on Renewables
    Mar 3, 2016 - Noah Long and Angus Duncan - utilitydive.com

Oregon just became the first state to pass legislation to get off of coal and double down on renewable energy instead. The Oregon Legislature voted Wednesday to eliminate coal generation from the state’s future and committed its largest utilities to supply at least half of their electricity from renewable resources by 2040.

  • In Kansas, Renewable Energy Could Soon Be A Goal, Not A Requirement
    May 4, 2015 - Samantha Page - thinkprogress.org

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R), along with representatives from the wind energy industry, legislative leadership, and conservative and business groups, announced a deal Monday to make the state’s renewable portfolio standard (RPS) optional, rather than a mandate.  The agreement is the culmination of several attempts to roll back the RPS, which requires utilities to get 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources, such as wind and solar.

  • California Power Grid Seen Able to Handle 100% Renewables
    Apr 14, 2015 - Christopher Martin and Jonathan N. Crawford - bloomberg.com

California’s power grid could handle taking 100 percent of its supply from renewables such as wind and solar, and meeting the goal for half that amount will be no problem, the state’s chief energy regulator said.  Governor Jerry Brown in January set one of the world’s most ambitious targets for cleaning up power generation, saying 50 percent of supply should come from renewables by 2030, a dramatic increase from the current goal of 33 percent by 2020.

  • California Will Run on 100 Percent Clean Energy by 2050, Stanford Professor Says
    Aug 8, 2014 - Brian Merchant - motherboard.vice.com

The entire state of California can—and will—get 100 percent of its energy from wind, water, and the sun in a matter of decades, according to a Stanford professor who just published an extensive report outlining the state's renewable power potential.  "There's about a 95 percent chance that [California] will be powered by 100 percent clean energy" by 2050, Mark Z. Jacobson told me in a phone interview.
